Stainless Steel
Small surface scratches or imperfections are common in EcoJarz products. Stainless steel products typically are covered in plastic while being processed, and again during shipping, in order to prevent scratches, small dents, and other imperfections. This produces large amounts of non-recyclable plastic waste. Ecojarz is one of the few producers that processes our stainless steel products without plastic!
Our Stainless steel will not rust, corrode or discolor under normal conditions. Rust spots are very rare, but it can occur due to various reasons during the manufacturing process. Any discoloring you see on the product is machining residue. This means that the stain you see is rust from the tool that was used to stamp the metal. However, this rust residue won't spread due to the chromium in the stainless steel. Typical jar bands (rings) that come with canning jars are often made from a different type of metal and do rust - sometimes quickly. So if you see rust on your EcoJarz product, check the band to see if that is where it's coming from. The good news is this is a very easy fix! Rust can be cleaned off EcoJarz stainless steel lids by rubbing it with a little bit of baking soda or steel wool.
Silicone
Silicone is a flexible, rubber-like material made primarily from Silicon (sand/rock) and Oxygen. It is a popular all over the world as a high-temperature and inert replacement to plastic. It is a great insulator, does not support bacterial growth, is UV stable, does not off-gas, is non toxic and is highly reusable. EcoJarz silicone lids are entirely non-reactive and can be used with hot or cold beverages without any worry of chemicals leaching into your food/drink.
Silicone lids can be washed like any other dish, by hand or in the dishwasher. You can even remove the silicone gasket from the stainless steel lid for deep cleaning.
