Earth Day 2021 - Steven Donziger

Earth Day 2021 - Steven Donziger

Sometimes environmental justice extends to it’s warriors, just as much as to the environment. From 1964 to 1992, the oil company Texaco extracted oil in Ecuador and in the process polluted the surrounding area so thoroughly, that the indigenous Ecuadoreans are still struggling with the aftermaths to their health and environment. Many suffer from birth defects and cancer.  For 20 years, lawyers like Steven Donziger have worked for free on behalf of the people of Ecuador to hold Chevron, formerly Texaco, accountable.

In 2011, Steven Donziger and the people of Ecuador won the case against Chevron. They won the case in Ecuador where the judge ordered Chevron pay $9.5 billion to the people of Ecuador.  However, it’s now 2021 and Chevron still has not paid up. Usually, exposing corruption, stops corruption. Instead, Chevron has turned around and attacked Steven Donziger, in order to avoid paying. Steven Donziger has been under house arrest in New York since 2018, for criminal contempt when he appealed the ruling by the court to turn over his laptop and phone to the prosecutors. Donziger laments that Chevron has spent more in legal fees and campaigns against him, than if they had just spent their efforts on cleaning up the mess they left behind in Ecuador.  We can’t let them get away with it.

“The best we’re ever going to do is, tell the truth, keep the narrative alive.”
